Wheelchair Rugby - Club History

Team Solent Wheelchair Rugby

wheelchair rugby passThe club was created after discussions with a group of former patients from the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Unit, Southampton Solent University, New Forest District Council, the Rugby Football Union and Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR).

After successful taster sessions, Team Solent, the sporting arm of Southampton Solent University, embraced the new wheelchair rugby club offering it a new home at Sports Centre St Mary's.

In September 2013, Team Solent Wheelchair Rugby welcomed London 2012 Paralympian and current international athlete Myles Pearson. Myles who has started a four year course at Southampton Solent University has also been accepted into the university’s High Performance Academy. The combination of Myles Pearson and Aaron Phipps talents and experience with the number of players in the overall squad merited the entry of two teams in the 2013/14 GBWR Division 2 Super Series events.

In the 16/17 season the Sharks finished in 5th place in the league, one better than the previous year.

The second team focuses on recreational sport involving players of all ages, from children through to adults. The team promotes the health and psychological benefits of sport through mass participation, whilst still offering competition experience. This squad also helps players increase their skills to eventually play for the elite team. The team plays in Division 3, so it can continue to offer competition to youth players.
