Football - Club History

In keeping with Southampton Solent University’s sports strategy, Sport Solent decided - in the early 00s - to integrate its football programme into the Saturday club structure. We were accepted into the Southampton FA, and in our first season pulled off an unprecedented treble, winning Southampton Junior Division 1, the Southampton Junior Cup and the Hampshire Junior Cup.

Following a treble-winning debut season Team Solent FC claimed the 2006/7 Southampton FA Senior 1 title, which meant we were proud to be accepted as members of the newly-formed Hampshire Premier League for the 2007/8 campaign.

Four seasons in that competition resulted in two runner up positions and a third place, but although the league pennant eluded us we twice won the League Cup, and also reached the final of the Southampton Senior Cup at St. Mary’s in three successive seasons, winning twice.

Although we could not repeat previous league success in the 2007/8 campaign, we maintained our record of gaining at least one trophy per season by winning the inaugural Hampshire Premier League cup final, defeating league champions AFC Stoneham on penalties in the final.

2008-2009 season

We finished a respectable third in the league. We managed to make our first appearance at St. Mary’s under the guidance of player turned manager James Grant, with a successful outcome as we defeated Nursling 2 – 0.

2009-2010 season

Under new manager Louis Langdown, this season saw us reach the Southampton Senior Cup final for a second consecutive year this time facing VT Reserves. Our previous season’s victory was reversed as we went down 2 – 0. The league campaign however saw an improvement as we moved up a place to second.

2010-2011 season

It was another good season for Team Solent FC as we again reached the final of the Southampton Senior Cup, beating QK Southampton 2-1 to regain the cup and winning the Hampshire Premier League Cup saw more silverware added to the trophy cabinet. After finishing runners up in the league for the second consecutive year we were accepted in to the Sydenhams Football League.

2011-2012 season

Moving to our new facility for the 2011/12 campaign, Test Park Sports Ground, we were accepted in to the Sydenham’s League (Wessex) and finished third in our first season in Division 1, narrowly missing promotion. The club and the facility were sufficiently graded for us to enter both the FA Cup and FA Vase.

A third place finish was repeated this season, but we were unable to make much progress in the various cup competitions. This campaign also saw us enter a reserves team in the Wyvern Combination League for the first time, with manager Martin Taylor steering us to a mid-table finish.

2013-2014 season

This season saw us involved in the FA Cup (with Budweiser) for the first time, as well as trying to progress through the league structure. We will also be competing in division 2 of the British Universities football competition. We have also entered an under 18 team into the Hampshire Youth League. This team will be managed and coached by Solent University students.
